Sometimes, when you try to install software, you may encounter an installer window where the text is too small to read. This problem can be frustrating, especially if the font size is so tiny that it’s nearly impossible to navigate through the installation process. If you’re struggling to read small text in app installers, there are ways to adjust the settings in Windows to improve the situation, such as adjusting the text size and using the Magnifier tool.
Why Are Fonts in Installers So Small?
There can be several reasons why fonts in certain installers are too small:
- DPI Scaling Issues: Some installers are designed with fixed font sizes and don’t scale properly with the system’s DPI settings, leading to very tiny text on high-resolution displays.
- Old Installer Programs: Legacy software might not be optimized for modern operating systems or high-DPI monitors, which can result in text and UI elements appearing too small.
- Incompatibility with Display Settings: Some installers don’t properly adhere to Windows’ display scaling settings, causing fonts to remain small even when scaling is adjusted system-wide.
Increase Text Size Using Windows Accessibility Settings
The first step to tackling unreadable text in installers is to adjust the overall text size through Windows’ accessibility options. This can help ensure that text is larger and easier to read.
- Open the Settings App
PressWindows + I
to open the Settings window. - Go to Accessibility
In the left sidebar, click on Accessibility. - Adjust Text Size
Under the Text size section, use the slider to increase the text size. Move it to the right to make the text larger (you can set it to a size up to 225%). - Apply the Changes
Click Apply to confirm the changes.
This adjustment will make text across most apps, including installers, larger and easier to read. However, in some cases, installers may still use small font sizes that don’t scale properly.
Use the Magnifier Tool for Detailed Reading
If increasing text size alone doesn’t resolve the issue or if the installer still has small, unreadable text, Windows offers a built-in Magnifier tool to help you zoom in on specific areas of the screen, including text in installers.
Press Windows + Plus (+)
to activate the Magnifier tool. This will zoom into your screen. You can keep pressing Windows + Plus (+)
to zoom further in.
